Local 2 settles contract with Multi-Employer Group
(September 2006)

After two years of struggle, Local 2 members have voted overwhelmingly to approve a new contract with the San Francisco Multi Employer Group hotels. The settlement brings to an end the long-running labor dispute that saw a two-week strike, a two-month lockout, and two years of boycott at the 13 MEG properties. The agreement will last until August 14, 2009.

With a settlement finally negotiated, Local 2 welcomes travellers back to the following hotels: Crowne Plaza Union Square; Grand Hyatt, Fairmont; Four Seasons; Hilton San Francisco; Holiday Inn Civic Center; Holiday Inn Express; Holiday Inn Fisherman's Wharf; Hyatt Regency; Mark Hopkins InterContinental; Omni; Palace; and Westin St. Francis. These and other union hotels in the San Francisco/San Mateo area can be reached through this site.

Congratulations and thanks to the thousands who stood strong throughout this long and difficult fight. Your steadfast courage, endurance and resolve will be remembered by our entire membership for many years to come.

The St. Regis becomes San Francisco’s newest Union Hotel (December 2005)

An overwhelming majority of St. Regis employees have signed cards declaring their wish to be represented by Local 2. The Starwood Corporation, which owns and operates the St. Regis, has signed a card-check agreement with Local 2 for any hotel that it builds, operates, or buys in San Francisco. A “Card Check” is a quick and simple process that allows workers to choose a union without harassment or intimidation from management. On Monday, November 28th, after a neutral third party determined that a majority of workers signed union authorization cards, the St Regis recognized UNITE-HERE! Local 2 as the workers’ representative.

Since 1999, the W, Courtyard Marriot, Holiday Inn Express, Metropolis, Four Seasons, the Omni, and this year Hotel Vitale and the St Regis have used Card Checks to become Local 2 members. Forward looking employers have made the business decision that they can have a successful hotel and their workers can have a real voice on the job. They have signed Card Check agreements with Local 2. The alternative is often a lengthy campaign marked by conflict. After over three years of actions, delegations, picket lines, marches, and a boycott, the Parc 55 finally became a union hotel. The Marriot fight took over seven years, and San Francisco saw a difficult fight at the Sir Francis Drake before the first contact was won. Card Check is a better alternative to long and messy fights—one that benefits the workers, the hotels, and the city as a whole.
